This excellent butterfly website http://www.vel.cc/t.asp?oattr=0 has images of most (still a few to go) butterfly species in Taiwan. Click through for more images and and different parts of the life cycle.
First the Lycaenidae (Gossamer-winged Butterflies, http://www.vel.cc/t.asp?oattr=0&yet=N&k=&k2=lycaenidae) hairstreaks, blues, and coppers. Most are quite small and quick. Wings are often streaked with bright colors and flash in the sun. 113 species.
Then Hesperiidae (the Skippers, http://www.vel.cc/t.asp?oattr=0&yet=N&k=&k2=Hesperiidae) Their common name describes their movement - a quick, skipping flight. They have thicker thoraxes than most butterflies, and their small wings may seem disproportionate to their bodies. The antennae of skippers end in a hook, instead of the usual club. Tend to be a bit drab, most are brown or gray, with white or orange markings. 64 species.
The Pieridae (Whites and Sulphurs, http://www.vel.cc/t.asp?oattr=0&yet=N&k=&k2=Pieridae) Common in urban areas, most Pieridae have white or yellow wings of small to medium size, with markings in black or orange. Have three pairs of walking legs. 36 in Taiwan.
The Nymphalidae (Brush-footed butterflies, http://www.vel.cc/t.asp?oattr=0&yet=N&k=&k2=Nymphalidae) Many appear to have just two pairs of legs, as the first pair is reduced in size. Brush-foots use these small legs to taste their food. A big family of 145 species.
And then the show-off Papilionidae (Swallowtails, http://www.vel.cc/t.asp?oattr=0&yet=N&k=&k2=Papilionidae).The name referring to the tail-like appendages on the hind-wings of many, but not all, species of this medium to large beauties. Also boast wing colors and patterns that make species identification fairly easy. 34 inhabit Taiwan.
