Appearance, habitats, calls, and status described well in this modestly sized, English-language guide (a Japanese language version is also available). Some photographs are printed a little too small. Published by the Chinese (Taiwanese) Wild Bird Federation (Birdlife Int. Taiwan partner).

A field guide to the Birds of Taiwan, by Wu Sen-Hsiong. ISBN 9579578001. Once the main key field guide to Taiwan birds, it is now some what dated (published 1991) and needing some taxonomic updating. Clear illustrations and distribution maps, main text in Chinese with Latin and common names in English. Published by the Taiwan Wild Bird Information Centre.

Well illustrated with route maps (sadly no Chinese addresses given), clear instructions, and good photographs of 70 common birds.

An excellent gift for a bird-loving friend. Over 70 species are beautifully depicted, minimal text (in Chinese), English and Latin names given.

Birdwatching at Dasyueshan. ISBN 9789860190595. A guide to the habitats and species at this excellent forest recreation area (aka Anmashan). The main text, sadly only in Chinese, gives a good introduction to the various trails. The simple maps (have some English) may be useful, as will the checklists and average-quality photos (English and Latin names given). Published by the Forestry Bureau.
